Luke Wright

Thu 4th March at 7:00pm

4 Talent Award Winner, Aisle16 founder and writer of C4’s Seven Ages of Love Luke Wright returns with his fourth solo show. Set against a backdrop of grotty Travelodges and open mic London, Luke tells the story of his ten years on stage.

Featuring some nipple-tweekingly awful teenage lyrics, sarcastic cricket commentators and the death of a very tight pair of jeans, Luke effortlessly mixes comedy and poetry as he tries to look past his own inflated ego and find out what really matters.

“Luke Wright shapes verse from the leading edge of the rejuvenated spoken-word scene. Comic, acute, rhythmic eulogies to modern life.” The Independent

“One of our best young poets.” Observer

Tom Wrigglesworth’s Open Return Letter To Richard Branson
Tom Wrigglesworth’s Open Return Letter To Richard Branson: Production Image
Sat 6th March at 7:00pm

Direct from a sell-out run at the Edinburgh festival, catch the award-winning comedian performing his critically acclaimed show.  Having witnessed a Virgin Train Manager abusing his position, (to the extent that Hitler would've watched admiringly and taken notes), Tom writes to Richard Branson about one random act of kindness which caused good to triumph over evil.  A cross between Sideshow Bob and Mark Thomas, join Tom as he recounts his hilarious and heart-warming true story involving the world’s biggest jobsworth, his fellow passengers, and a brown paper bag from the onboard canteen.

“Formidable…beautifully complex material, both hilarious and touching, leaving you outraged and amused at the same time…it takes some kind of brilliance to do that to an audience.  The gods of comedy chose Tom Wrigglesworth for greatness.” Scotsman ****

Shelter
Shelter: Production Image Ian McGlynn
Wed 10th March to Sat 13th March at 7:00pm

How do you become homeless? Is it because you refuse to engage with society? Or is it because society can’t find a way to engage with you? Is it through laziness and apathy? Or circumstance and tragedy? Can it only happen to other people? Or could it happen to you?

Combining caustic wit and searing drama, Shelter, the new play from Rondo Artistic Director Ian McGlynn, looks at how homelessness happens – and how hard it is to escape.

Provoction seeks to examine contemporary social and political issues with a razor sharp sense of humour and a barely controlled simmering rage at the mess we’re in today - all wrapped up in a good night out.

Thu 18th March at 7:00pm

The Urban Folk Quartet perform a heady mix of traditional tunes from England and Spain, with a generous dash of vibrant fusion rhythms from the Birmingham scene.

The band consists of demon fiddle players Joe Broughton (Albion Band, Feast of Fiddles) and Paloma Trigas (Carlos Nunez) with the irrepressible multi instrumentalist Frank Moon and storming rhythms from Tom Chapman.

Having been discovered in their teens by legendary artists The Albion Band and Carlos Nunez respectively, Joe and Paloma’s careers have in many ways taken parallel paths both gaining much experience touring the world. In 2004 they performed their first fiddle duet together to great acclaim and so the seeds for The Urban Folk Quartet were born.

Joe and Frank met at The Birmingham Conservatoire School of Music and realised they had a lot of common musical interests. They met Tom when he was experimenting with a Cajon-based drum set up, a sound that fitted perfectly with the concept of the band: so The Urban Folk Quartet was born.

Sat 20th March at 7:00pm

Following the success of 20,000 Leagues Under the Office, Publick Transport presents a new comedy set in Russia where two civil servants jostle for power. One is a puffed up bureaucrat in search of a job description, the other an unexpected inspector. Reluctant to commit to specific thought for fear of showing ignorance of the party line - which changes hourly - they make idle conversation out of which is extrapolated the deepest meaning, while their attempts at political correctness only result in grammatical incorrectness.

Kafka's Dick
Kafka's Dick: Production Image Alan Bennett
Wed 24th March to Sat 27th March at 6:30pm

Tedious Kafka aficionado Sydney and his frustrated wife Linda are visited by a reincarnated Franz Kafka and his friend Max Brod.  Brod has disobeyed Kafka’s instruction to destroy his works after his death, but Kafka's wish for anonymity is due to a very embarrassing personal shortcoming. This surreal play includes a supernatural tortoise, hidden quiche and a finale set in Heaven.

First performed at the Royal Court Theatre in 1986, Bennett’s play explores the very relevant themes of fame and the value of reputation.
