Captivating and unforgettable, A State of Silence is inspired by George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. We are transported into a nightmarish world that is frighteningly familiar. Where every citizen is property of the state, denied of identity, freedom and truth. In this provoking, physical production, Doublespeak Theatre Company explores censorship, surveillance and lack of access to original, unedited information in today’s society.
A compelling reflection of our modern world, A State of Silence is a haunting reminder of what our future could hold…
Doublespeak Theatre Company was formed by the graduating 3rd year Performing Arts students at Bath Spa University as part of the ‘Hatching Out’ season. |

Peter is 26. He’s about to enter the priesthood. But he has doubts. A visit to his old headmaster and mentor Father Kennedy for advice and assurance leads to questions about the past. And the answers to those questions turn Peter’s world upside down – and threaten to destroy everything he holds dear. But Father Kennedy’s revelations are more grotesque and startling than Peter can possibly imagine...
Dougie Blaxland’s searing new drama unflinchingly examines questions of identity, faith, abuse, sex and power.

The life of the violinist and composer Joseph Emidy is one of the most extraordinary of modern times. Born in Guinea, West Africa in 1775, at the height of European colonialism, Emidy was first captured as a slave by the Portuguese, then kidnapped by the British Navy, serving as a fiddler on The Indefatigable during the French wars. Landing at Falmouth, Cornwall and being presented with a magical tin violin made by an illiterate miner, Emidy became a musical genius of the early nineteenth century. Boy Josh finds himself embarking on a thrilling journey through worlds familiar and unknown. His epic adventure demands a resistance against the most savage of oppression before he finds freedom and love in music and song. On the way he meets mad sailors, gabbling Cornish fools, crazy fishermen and a woman who softly plays the strings of his heart. |

One of the leading lights on the UK and international folk scenes, Karen Tweed is the mercurial, wacky and elegant English accordion queen, known for groundbreaking collaborations (Kathryn Tickell, The Poozies, Swåp, Two Duos Quartet, May Monday) and inspirational teaching. Her stunning solo album Essentially Invisible to the Eye is out now; a beautiful suite, taking us on an autobiographical musical journey, illustrating how much the accordion has become Karen’s voice and pen and muse. One woman, one instrument ... her touch and musicality is quite extraordinary, breaking accordionesque preconceptions and boundaries. She has a box full of musical treasures to share. “I honestly can't remember the last time I enjoyed folk-music as much…” Allgigs.co.uk |
